Ken Moffett’s “Transparent Color”

Local architect Ken Moffett, a Design Center member and volunteer professional advisor, has an exhibit of his watercolors entitled “Transparent Light” at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church Gallery from July 10 to September 10. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 16 from 6 to 7:30 PM at the church.   The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 8 PM and Friday from 9 AM to 4:30 PM at 2931 Kingston Pike.

Ken has generously donated an original watercolor each year to the ETCDC’s 500 Block Silent Auction, which have always been highly sought by our party attendees. He has provided design assistance on a number of projects at the Design Center over time.  His most recent contribution has been a rendering for the Wall Avenue Streetscape proposal.

Two New Student Interns Join Design Center

Brandon

Brandon Harvey and Lauren McCarty have joined the Design Center this summer as student interns. Brandon, who came to East Tennessee from Memphis, has an undergraduate degree in Urban Studies / Urban Planning.  He will be in his second year of the UT Masters of Architecture program this fall.  Brandon has already been a big contribution on ETCDC projects including the facade program, Island Home Park and Oakwood Elementary School.

Lauren

Knoxville native Lauren McCarty is a rising 4th year student in the UT School of Architecture and a resident of the vibrant downtown Knoxville community.  Lauren has taken on an new initiative of building a Google map of past ETCDC projects which we hope to integrate with our website in addition to providing a facelift to a Central Ave. facade project.

These students join our other student interns Archita Patel, Interior Design and Will Copeland, Landscape Design.

Ribbon Cutting at PetSafe Downtown DogPark

Tuesday at 10 AM the PetSafe Downtown DopPark will be open to pups and their guests. This project originated with ETCDC and the volunteer efforts of Carol R. Johnson Associates, a local landscape architecture firm. New Landscape Intern at the Design Center

We are excited to announce that Will Copeland has joined the Design Center as a student intern. Will, who’s home is in Cincinnatti, Ohio, came to Tennessee to study landscape design. He recently graduated from UT with a Bachelor in Landscape Design and Construction and will enter the College of Architecture and Design this fall in pursuit of a Masters in Landscape Architecture. He has immediately made himself valuable with is work on our project for Blount Mansion, Open Doors of Tennessee, the 17th Street Enhancement and the Therapeutic Health Activities Community Center for Scott Appalachian Industries. Will came highly recommended  by recent intern Nora Hutchison, who graduated from UT and is continuing her education at the UT Organic Farm.

Architectural Explorer Post Meets at Design Center

Architecture Explorer Post 901, which exposes young people to the architecture profession, met at the Design Center to review design solutions developed by the students.   Pictured are Thomas Caldwell, an architect and the Explorer Post Advisor, Gene Burr, a planner and committee chair, and Perry Childress, from the ETCDC. These 9th and 10th grade students participate in small design projects and develop solutions for real design problems that have been addressed at the East Tennessee Community Design Center.

Here we see Nigel Johnson presenting his design to the group. Other students in the program include Niki Saffles, Michael Lancaster and Joseph Ellis.

The Explorers are part of a national organization, Learning for Life, and are supported here locally by the East Tennessee American Institute for Architects.
