Media Boxes

Media boxes, or news paper boxes as they are referred to in some circles, are believed by some folks to be unsightly and distract from the general appearance of a streetscape. Some would go as far to say as they are a mobility hindrance to people with disabilities.

The Community Design Center, in partnership with the City of Knoxville, the Central Business Improvement District, Market Square District, and most importantly the News Sentinel embarked on a trial program using “condo racks” as an option to multiple boxes.

Let me emphasis trial basis. Currently the trial basis is and most likely will always be a voluntary participation program. Loosely described, under the present arrangement the City purchases and installs the racks and the News Sentinel maintains the racks as far as participation by other media sources and in general the appearance of the racks. Very big kudos are awarded to the News Sentinel, especially Mr. Marshall Smith, KNS Distribution Manager. Without the News Sentinel willing participation and encouragement for other media to participate this effort would never have gotten off the ground.

Presently there are three locations with the new arrangements. Market Square North, Market Square South, and Gay Street at Krutch Park/Regions Bank.

Market Square North is a coral arrangement where different media are combined into multiple ganged boxes and the boxes are corralled within a fence type enclosure.

Market Square South and Krutch Park/Regions Bank are “condo” units where media are gathered and combined into units and mounted permanently on in this case steel post bolted to the hard surface below,

Special thanks to Brian Pittman, AIA for his professional volunteer efforts, David Brace, Bob Whetsel, Michele Hummel and Marshall Smith for all of their work and efforts in creating and maintaining this all volunteer program.

Specialty Plates

Monday, November 16th, 2009

What’s on your plate…… a tag line from the Tennessee Arts Commission http://www.arts.state.tn.us. You may not be aware but most of the state funding for arts organizations around the Tennessee comes from the sale of personalized license plates.

The State of Tennessee offers more than 90 specialty license plates for Tennessee motorists to display on their registered motor vehicles. These plates represent colleges and universities, branches of the military, special interest organizations, professional organizations and other topics.

From time to time the state legislature tries to confiscate, or even delete arts funding from this source. In general, the Tennessee Arts Commission (TAC) receives a portion of all specialty license plates revenue, and in turn allocates that funding to arts organizations through a grant application process.

Buy a specialty plate: http://www.tennessee.gov/revenue/vehicle/licenseplates/specialty.htm and help our state’s arts organizations. By the way, several plates are specific to the TAC and are listed under the miscellaneous tab of the web site.

The East Tennessee Community Design Center is an arts organization and a beneficiary of these license plate funds. Supporting the Tennessee Arts Commission supports your East Tennessee Design Center.

Knoxville Station Transit Center

Transit Center Presentation

Transit Center Presentation

Nell Campbell AIA (Bullock Smith & Partners) and David Collins AIA (McCarty Holsaple McCarty Architects) both from the joint venture firm Intermodal Architect Associates presented a design overview of the Knoxville Station Transit Center today at the Knoxville Downtown Design Studio. The event was an informal presentation followed by a question and answer opportunity from the audience. Interestingly the station will support 20 buses, will be Silver Certified under the LEED guidelines, has a solar array and ground water source heating and cooling system. Funding from the multi-million dollar project comes from many sources, with only 10% being local. If you were unable to attend this session you may contact either presenter with questions or observations. Second Tuesday each month the E. T. Community Design Center will be arranging for and hosting a presentation of a community interest project.
