Community Development

The Community Development program began as Rural Connections in 1988 with the goal of helping to develop organizational capacity in isolated, distressed rural areas throughout East Tennessee.  The program was renamed to recognize the Community Design Center's role in the urban environment and a diversification of program activity.  One such program activity is the East Tennessee regional Leadership Association which seeks to coordinate and develop leadership skills throughout the East Tennessee region.

Beginning in June 1997, the East Tennessee Community Design Center embarked on a three year mission to build leadership programs in East Tennessee. The program begin with a conference series entitled "Blueprint for Leadership" which was designed to teach leadership development to communities with little or no leadership activities. The conference series was a tremendous success and the Design Center now provides technical assistance to all the participants from this conference series. The Community Design Center is currently assisting with a regional leadership initiative.
